01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
It's been open since 1950. It started as a small building with a lobby, craft room and restrooms that served the new indoor/outdoor community pool, which the city calls the first of its kind in the nation. The land was first Baby Creek Park, named for the Baubee (Babie) family, the area's original French landowners; it was renamed for Gen. George S. Patton in 1946. A $900,000 renovation in 2021 opened up the pool ceiling for new HVAC ductwork, redid the dance room and refinished the gym floor. The park holds the last surviving marsh from Baby Creek, and the Joe Louis Greenway is being built through it.
