The Palmer Park Apartment Buildings Historic District is a neighborhood of ornate apartment buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, bounded roughly by Pontchartrain Boulevard, McNichols Road and Woodward Avenue. For decades it was Detroit's best-known gay neighborhood, with LGBT-owned bars, bookstores and restaurants. In the 1980s, crime and police harassment pushed many residents up Woodward to Ferndale and Royal Oak. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, with a boundary increase in 2005, and neighboring Palmer Park hosts Hotter Than July's candlelight vigil and picnic.
