One Woodward Avenue rises at the foot of Woodward Avenue overlooking Hart Plaza and the Detroit River. It was designed by Detroit-based architect Minoru Yamasaki for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, which commissioned it as its headquarters; construction ran from 1959 to 1962. The 28-story International Style tower, wrapped in narrow vertical white precast-concrete ribs, was Yamasaki's first skyscraper, and he reused elements of its facade design a few years later for the original World Trade Center towers in New York. The building later housed American Natural Resources before taking its current address-based name. It remains an active office tower in Detroit's financial district today.
