North Farmington High School opened on September 7, 1961, as Farmington Public Schools raced to keep up with young families pouring into the northwest suburbs; in that first year it had about 600 students in grades seven through ten. Today it is a four-year high school of roughly 1,200 students on 13 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, home of the brown-and-gold Raiders. It is known for strong theater, music and art programs, with a performing arts wing added in 1999, and its alumni list is long for a suburban school. Pam Dawber of Mork & Mindy graduated in 1968, Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy in 1971, and Olympic hockey gold medalist Megan Keller in 2014. Elizabeth Berkley, later Jessie Spano on Saved by the Bell and the star of Showgirls, grew up in Farmington Hills and went to North Farmington as a teenager, already flying out for auditions and training, until her family moved to Los Angeles in the fall of 1988. The school still counts her among its famous alumni.
