Actor and director Rick Sperling founded Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit in 1992, after budget cuts stripped arts programs from most Detroit schools. Its teen ensembles in acting, singing and technical theatre create original plays and concerts, and over 30 years 95% of ensemble members graduated high school on time and went on to college. Mosaic has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, the Apollo and Carnegie Hall, toured Africa, Asia and Europe, and won gold medals at the 2014 World Choir Games. Its alumni include Tony, Emmy and Grammy winners and nominees. Shows play in its own Mosaic Blackbox Theater on Antietam Avenue and at partner venues such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, where the musical Wade In runs May 7–16, 2027.
