The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival was held every summer from 1976 to 2015 on private woodland northeast of Hart in Oceana County, a site attendees called “The Land.” Women built it, staffed it and attended it, and it grew into one of the most significant events in US lesbian cultural history. It also became one of the most debated: its policy excluding trans women was a major controversy within the LGBTQ+ community. The festival held its final gathering in 2015, after 40 seasons.
