The 4,038-seat Michigan Theatre, designed by Rapp & Rapp on the site of Henry Ford's first garage, opened on August 23, 1926 and was one of the Midwest's grandest movie palaces until it closed as a cinema on March 5, 1967. It reopened on March 27, 1972 as the Michigan Palace supper club with a week of Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, and from 1973 rock promoter Steven Glantz ran it as a concert hall. David Bowie, the Stooges (whose final 1974 show was released as “Metallic K.O.”), the New York Dolls, Aerosmith, Bob Seger, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult and Kiss (1974–75) played there before it closed for good in 1976.
