01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

Ground broke on September 28, 1967, on a layout by Charles Moneypenny, who had already designed Daytona. The first race ran October 13, 1968, and Cale Yarborough won the first NASCAR race on June 15, 1969, after LeeRoy Yarbrough spun just 300 yards from the finish. Builder Lawrence H. LoPatin's company went bankrupt, and Roger Penske bought the track on the Lenawee County courthouse steps in 1973. Under Penske the grandstands grew from 25,000 seats to more than 125,000. The 18-degree banking and 73-foot-wide turns leave room for three- and four-wide racing.
