Dan and Denise Zieja opened Melodies & Memories as a book and record shop in Warren in 1988, later moving it to its longtime home on Gratiot Avenue in Eastpointe. Through the 1990s and 2000s the store became a training ground for future names in Detroit's DJ and techno scene: producer House Shoes worked the counter there in the 1990s, and around 2000 a teenage Seth Troxler was the shop's techno buyer, working alongside Terrence Parker and Reggie Harrell. The store built a reputation for its enormous stock of vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks and rare soul singles, and in 2018 it made national news when it sold a lost, unreleased Motown single by Frank Wilson to Jack White. Melodies & Memories still operates on Gratiot Avenue today, and it now displays the old clock that once hung outside Golden World Records, Motown's second Detroit studio.
