Gospel music matriarch Mattie Moss Clark, famed for shaping the sound of the Church of God in Christ's mass choirs and for raising her daughters as the Clark Sisters, founded this music school in 1979 to train singers and instrumentalists on organ, piano, percussion, woodwinds and strings. After Clark's death in 1994, her daughter Dorinda Clark-Cole, herself a Grammy-winning gospel singer, took over as the conservatory's head and has kept it going under the family name. The school, now known as the Mattie Moss Clark Conservatory of Music, operates today out of Ferndale, just north of Detroit, still carrying forward the musical tradition Clark built across generations of Detroit gospel.
