Wayne State's sports building, started in 1965 for Detroit's Olympic bid and now home of Warriors volleyball.
01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Construction on the Matthaei Physical Education Center began in 1965 as part of Detroit's bid for the 1968 Summer Olympics, an effort led by Detroit native Frederick Matthaei. The building covers nearly 94,000 square feet. Since basketball moved to the Fieldhouse in 2021, the main gym belongs to volleyball, and in fall 2023 a Teraflex court replaced the Boston Garden-style parquet. The WSU Hall of Fame, with 269 honorees, sits just outside the main arena doors, and the building also holds the pool, three basketball courts, a dance studio and two weight rooms.
- Main gym: 1,131 seats
- Teraflex volleyball court since 2023
- WSU Hall of Fame outside the gym
- Built for Detroit's 1968 Olympic bid
