01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
CMU softball has played on this spot since 1973, when new fields went in as part of the Rose Center athletic complex. A $250,000 renovation came in 1995 and a $400,000 upgrade in 2006 added seating. On April 19, 2008, the park was dedicated to Margo Jonker, who coached the Chippewas for 40 years and retired with 1,268 wins, ninth most in NCAA Division I history and the most in Mid-American Conference history. It's pronounced "Yonker." The infield is Hilltopper Stabilizer, a synthetic dirt made of crushed lava rock that sheds rain instead of soaking it up, so the season can start earlier in spring.
