Mangonadas del Barrio

A Mexican snack shop in Southwest Detroit: mangonadas, aguas frescas, chile-dusted fruit cups and filled churros.

01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

Mangonadas del Barrio is the Hernandez Martinez family's business. In 2008, out of work, Antonio "Tony" Hernandez bought a pallet of mangos and set up on a street corner, selling nearly all of it in two hours; a neighbor turned the leftovers into mangonadas, and that sparked the shop. Today it specializes in Mexican snacks and desserts: mangonadas, aguas frescas, fruit cups with Tajín and chamoy, filled churros, Doritos preparados and ice cream sundaes.
