Drapery and carpet man William S. Buckley built the four-story, 250-room Majestic in the theater district, and it opened on May 1, 1926, for residents and travelers alike, with a floor reserved for women and six storefronts, including a cafe, a barber and a drugstore. Only 50 rooms had private baths, and by 1932 Depression rates had dropped to $15 a month. Boxer Harry Raskin ran the Pow-Wow Bar inside from about 1942 to 1968. About 95 people lived there when arson struck on March 30, 1972; it never reopened, scrappers stripped it, it burned again in October 1974, and it was razed after an October 28, 1975, demolition permit.
