01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

Alumnae raised the money for the Michigan League as the women's answer to the men-only Michigan Union, and the theater opened with the building in May 1929. A $50,000 gift from Gordon Mendelssohn paid for it, and he named it for his mother. Faculty and students tried a chamber music series here in 1938, but UMS only started presenting here regularly in 1993, when Eartha Kitt and Barbara Cook played the 100th May Festival's Cabaret Ball. Today it's mostly theater and song recitals. The house was renovated in 1995.

  1. Open since 1929
  2. 658 seats on the main floor and balcony
  3. The UMS Ticket Office sits right below it
  4. No elevator to the balcony
