Louisiana Creole Gumbo – Eastern Market
Detroit's Creole-Cajun standby since 1970, ladling gumbo, jambalaya and po'boys from family recipes over a century old.

01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Joseph and Margerine Stafford opened Louisiana Creole Gumbo in October 1970, then called Luzianne Creole Gumbo, at 2051 Gratiot on the edge of Eastern Market. Joe learned to cook from his mother on Bayou Lafourche in Louisiana, and the kitchen still follows his recipes. After 53 years, the old carryout spot closed on November 28, 2023, and the business moved three blocks to a full-service restaurant at 2830 Gratiot. Expect gumbo, jambalaya, po'boys, red beans and rice, and cornbread.
