03 / The story of this place
What was here?
Albert Kahn designed only a few hotels; he drew this one with his associate Ernest Wilby for Harry L. Pierson. The four-story brick Lincoln opened on October 16, 1917, at Grand River and Centre, with 111 rooms, shops and a big cafeteria on the ground floor. It served travelers and residents for three decades. A demolition permit came through on May 2, 1949, to clear the way for a J.L. Hudson department store parking garage; that garage came down in 2003 and the Detroit Opera House garage replaced it in 2005.
