Lili's 21 was run by Maria Lidia “Lili” Karwowski in a bar hidden off Joseph Campau on Jacob Street, entered from the alley through a back door. From the late 1970s it was one of the first bars in the Detroit area to welcome punk rock, with black walls, Iggy Pop posters and monster toys, and it gave countless local punk and garage bands an early stage. Lili died in the late 1990s, and the club held its farewell run in late September 2002, with a memorabilia auction and an Iggy Pop night, ending with the Trash Brats, the Polish Muslims and Junk Monkeys on September 30.
