A former soul and jazz nightclub, later an alternative-rock venue, on East Grand Boulevard (building opened 1915, abandoned around 2000), known for decades as the Latin Quarter.
01 / The story of this place

The building opened in December 1915 as the two-screen Duplex Theatre and in 1922 was rebuilt by architect C. Howard Crane as the Oriole Terrace ballroom, later the Grand Terrace. After a fire in April 1940 it reopened as the Latin Quarter, the name it kept for about 50 years, and became a major soul and jazz nightclub hosting Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops, James Brown, Etta James, Ray Charles, Al Green, B.B. King, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr. As Grand Quarters in the 1980s–90s it booked alternative acts such as Jane's Addiction, Sonic Youth and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the building was abandoned around 2000.
