Lake Shore High School has educated students from St. Clair Shores, a lakefront suburb on Lake St. Clair just northeast of Detroit, since the mid-twentieth century as part of the Lake Shore Public Schools district. Mark Wells, who grew up playing hockey in the Detroit area, attended the school in the early 1970s before his hockey career took him to Bowling Green State University and then to the United States national team. Wells went on to become part of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" US Olympic hockey team that beat the Soviet Union at Lake Placid, one of the most celebrated upsets in American sports history, giving this ordinary suburban high school a small but real connection to that Olympic moment.
