Susan Woods created the Lake Michigan Film Festival as the regional sister event of the East Lansing Film Festival, to show and award films from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. The lineup included short documentaries, student work and independent features. Its final edition ran February 26 to March 1, 2026, at Studio C! in Okemos, opening with The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit. In February 2026 Woods announced that both festivals would end after 29 years because she was ready to step away, even though attendance remained strong.
