01 / The story of this place

The stadium opened on November 4, 1972, when the Chippewas beat Illinois State 28-21 in front of a Homecoming crowd. It was first named for Saginaw banker R. Perry Shorts, a CMU grad from 1900; in June 1983 coach Kenneth "Bill" Kelly's name was added. A 1998 expansion brought it to today's 30,255 seats, and since September 2022 the field honors Hall of Fame coaches Roy Kramer and Herb Deromedi. The 32-by-100-foot videoboard at the south end went up in 2019 and is the largest in the MAC. The west side has a two-tier press box with nine suites and club-level seating.
