The State Theatre, a John Eberson 'atmospheric' movie palace, opened on July 14, 1927 for W.S. Butterfield Theatres and was bought by the Hinman Company in 1985. With about 1,590 seats it became Kalamazoo's premier live-performance venue, hosting concerts and comedians such as Lewis Black and Kid Cudi, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. It closed and was put up for sale in November 2024, and in late September 2025 Dan and Holly Carmichael (Lead Balloon Productions) bought it.
