Detroit muralist Ijania Cortez painted this large portrait mural on Cass Avenue at Forest Avenue and unveiled it on September 30, 2022, as a tribute to two women who shaped Detroit's cultural life for decades. Josephine Harreld Love was a classically trained pianist and educator who founded Your Heritage House, a hands-on museum that introduced generations of Detroit children to Black art, music and history. Dell Pryor ran her own influential gallery on the city's east side, giving space and visibility to Black artists at a time when few other Detroit galleries would. The mural sits in Midtown, near Wayne State University and the Cultural Center where both women spent much of their working lives, and it's part of a wider push by local artists and institutions to put the faces of Detroit's often under-credited Black cultural leaders back into public view.
