Detroit-area Ukrainian immigrants founded the school in Hamtramck in 1936 to give their children a Ukrainian-language, faith-based education, at a time when the surrounding Hamtramck and Detroit neighborhoods held one of the country's largest Ukrainian communities. Ulana Suprun, who later became a physician and Ukraine's acting minister of health from 2016 to 2019, attended the school from the 1970s until 1981, part of the tightly knit Ukrainian-American community that centered its social and religious life around the parish and its classrooms. As its enrollment and the surrounding community's needs grew, the school moved from Hamtramck to a larger, purpose-built campus in suburban Warren during the 1980s. It continues to operate today as a Catholic school serving preschool through eighth grade, run by the Ukrainian Catholic eparchy alongside a companion high school.
