Real estate developer Dan Gilbert's company Bedrock began building Hudson's Detroit in 2017 on the site of the demolished J.L. Hudson's department store on Woodward Avenue, planning both a twelve-story mid-rise building and a taller tower. General Motors announced in April 2024 that it would move its global headquarters from the Renaissance Center into the new development, and after the project's timeline shifted, GM's offices and a showroom formally opened inside the completed mid-rise building on January 12, 2026, marking the automaker's fourth Detroit headquarters since 1911. The taller portion of the project, a 49-story, 681-foot skyscraper meant to include the Detroit EDITION hotel along with condominiums, remains under construction and is expected to open in 2027. Together the buildings represent one of the largest private developments in Detroit's modern history, built directly on ground once occupied by the beloved Hudson's store.
