Rabbi Jacob Segal and a small group of Detroit-area Jewish community leaders founded Hillel Day School in 1958, opening Michigan's first non-Orthodox Jewish day school with only a handful of students and pioneering parents in the Conservative movement's day-school approach. The school rented space from various Jewish institutions before settling permanently in Farmington Hills in 1970, where it has since grown to serve several hundred students from kindergarten through eighth grade in both secular and Jewish studies. Actress Selma Blair, later known for films including Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde, attended Hillel as a child in the 1970s and 1980s while growing up in the Detroit suburbs. In 2008 the school's board voted to become a nondenominational community day school, reflecting broader shifts in American Jewish life, while keeping its founding name and mission. Hillel Day School continues to operate today from its Farmington Hills campus.
