01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
The library's oldest known record dates to 1856: local historian Clara Mae Beach found an ornate handwritten book ledger in the township archives. The library shut down during the Civil War, and the same ledger was then used to log stray livestock and ear marks. By 1915 it held 865 books and was open two hours a week with Nellie Keller as librarian. It later lived in the 1890 town house on East Livingston Road and, from 1982, in the former Highland United Methodist Church. In 2002 it moved into its current building on land that once belonged to the Beach family.
