01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Henry Komrofsky opened Henry the Hatter on Gratiot Avenue in 1893, making it one of Detroit's oldest retailers. President Eisenhower wore one of its homburgs to his inauguration, and the shop made its own hats on site until 1985. After 65 years on Broadway downtown, the store lost its lease in 2017 and reopened on December 8, 2017, on Riopelle Street in Eastern Market. Today it stocks Stetson, Borsalino, Kangol, Biltmore and more, and still cleans and reblocks hats.
