The Dearborn Fordson Public Schools Board of Education founded Fordson Junior College in September 1938, initially operating out of the basement of Fordson High School under the high school's own principal, Kenneth MacLeod. Renamed Dearborn Junior College in 1946, the school became Henry Ford Community College in 1952 after receiving a major bequest tied to the Henry Ford Trade School, honoring the automaker whose name it still carries. Actor Tom Skerritt, later known for films including Alien and M*A*S*H, took classes at the school in the 1950s after leaving the US Air Force, part of a wave of veterans using it to restart their educations. The college added its first bachelor's degree, in culinary arts, in 2014, and was renamed Henry Ford College to reflect its broadened mission. It continues to operate today from its campus on Evergreen Road in Dearborn, offering associate and bachelor's degrees to the region.
