Hamtramck Hostel lives in a former local boarding house on Holmes Street in Hamtramck, the densely packed, multi-ethnic city surrounded by Detroit. It runs like a budget European pensione: mostly private rooms with shared bathrooms, a shared kitchen, a TV lounge, a big backyard with a fire pit, and bikes on hand. It's built for out-of-towners: you need to live outside Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties unless you have a student ID, and you have to be 18 or older. Hamtramck's Polish, Bangladeshi and Yemeni restaurants and bars are a short walk away, so dinner is never far.

Getting there
Check in between 3 and 10 p.m.; checkout is 11 a.m., and parking is free. Mind the rule before you book: you need to live outside Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties or show a student ID.
