Grosse Pointe Public Schools opened Grosse Pointe North High School in 1968 to serve the growing northern half of the Grosse Pointe district, as a companion to the older Grosse Pointe South High School. Drummer Meg White, later half of the Detroit rock duo the White Stripes with then-husband Jack White, grew up in Grosse Pointe and graduated from North in the early 1990s before the family later settled in southwest Detroit, where the band formed. The school has since built a reputation in academics, music and athletics, and its campus on Vernier Road remains one of two public high schools serving the Grosse Pointe communities. It continues to operate today as a full comprehensive high school within Grosse Pointe Public School System.
