What’s it like to stay here?
The Grand Hotel opened on July 10, 1887, on Mackinac Island's bluff after just 93 days of building, to a design by Detroit architects Mason & Rice. Its front porch, about 660 feet long, is billed as the longest in the world and looks out over the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper & Co. decorated the rooms so that no two are alike, and the 1980 film Somewhere in Time was shot here. After nearly nine decades of Woodfill and Musser family ownership starting in 1933, it was sold to KSL Capital Partners in 2019. It's seasonal, early May to the third week of October; there are no cars on the island, and a formal dress code applies in the main areas after 6:30 PM.

Getting there
Your car stops at the ferry: park at the docks in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, then the hotel's horse-drawn carriage brings you up from the island docks for a per-person cash fare. Not staying the night? Non-guests pay an admission fee to tour the hotel and grounds.
