General Motors was formed in 1908 by William C. Durant as a holding company for Buick and picked up Olds Motor Works that same year; Chevrolet joined in 1918. For decades its world headquarters sat in the Renaissance Center on the riverfront. On January 12, 2026, GM formally opened its new headquarters and showroom on floors 8 through 11 of the Block Building at Hudson's Detroit, on the site of the old J.L. Hudson's department store.
