The Freep Film Festival is the Detroit Free Press's own documentary festival, a curated five-day event built around films connected to Detroit and Michigan. After screenings, directors and the people in the films sat down with the audience. Venues included the Detroit Film Theatre, with live events centered downtown. The official website still shows the April 10–14, 2024 festival as the latest, and a third-party report says there was no 2025 edition.

Detroit Black Film Festival
Independent films directed, written or produced by Black filmmakers, at a Detroit festival Lazar and Marshalle Favors started in 2020. The 7th edition in September 2026 screens 89 films from 30 countries, with the Charles H. Wright Museum as its hub.
