Stevie Wonder attended this Detroit public school in the 1950s, a short walk from a house on Greenlawn Street where his family lived after moving from Saginaw in 1954. Wonder, who lost his sight shortly after birth, later transferred to the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, while continuing to spend time in Detroit as his Motown career took off in the early 1960s. The Fitzgerald Elementary name has since been retired; the same building at 8145 Puritan Street today houses Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary-Middle School, part of the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The school lies in the northwest Detroit neighborhood that later took the Fitzgerald name.
