The Evergreen Cemetery Association founded this burial ground on Woodward Avenue between Seven and Eight Mile roads in 1905, starting with about 50 acres that expanded at its peak in 1910 to more than 240 acres, stretching south into land that is now part of Palmer Park before later sales and reorganization brought it back down to roughly its original footprint. Charles Bowles, elected Detroit's mayor in 1930 with the backing of Ku Klux Klan-aligned voters after running as a write-in candidate, was recalled from office within months amid a scandal-ridden six-month term, one of the most turbulent chapters in the city's political history; he is buried here after his death in 1957. The cemetery remains an active, privately operated burial ground today, its long Woodward Avenue frontage still a quiet landmark on the city's north end.
