03 / The story of this place

What was here?

Architect Charles Luckman designed this glass-clad conference hotel, which opened in 1976 as the Hyatt Regency Dearborn next to Fairlane Town Center and Ford World Headquarters. As a Hyatt in 2012 it had 772 rooms and more than 62,000 square feet of function space, including the 17,700-square-foot Great Lakes Center, and until 2018 only the Renaissance Center Marriott was bigger in Michigan. After the Hyatt years it went by several names: Adoba Hotel Dearborn/Detroit, Royal Dearborn Hotel & Convention Center and Edward Village Michigan Hotel. The City of Dearborn condemned it, and it closed on December 14, 2018. The US Marshals Service sold it in 2021, apartment plans stalled, and a sheriff's sale followed in 2024.
