01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Flower Day is the day Detroit's gardening season officially kicks off. Since 1967, growers from the Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association and all over the Midwest have packed Eastern Market's sheds and side streets with annuals, perennials, herbs, veggie starts and hanging baskets. Tens of thousands of people show up, many before sunrise with wagons in tow, to grab the best plants before they're gone. There's live music and food, and it's free to get in. If crowds aren't your thing, the market runs smaller Flower Tuesday markets in May, and Shed 6 sells flowers every day from Mother's Day through Father's Day.
