01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The building went up in 1915–16 with the money Andrew Carnegie gave Detroit for branch libraries. Marcus Burrowes designed it; he later did the Parkman branch too. It's named for Divie Bethune Duffield, who sat on Detroit's library commission. The pale stone front and big arched windows still show off the original classical design. Inside you'll find book clubs, and small groups can book a meeting space for free.
