01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
The institute traces back to 1917, when J. Dallas Dort founded the Community Music Association. The building was first planned as an addition to the Dort home, but after the house burned, construction started on a stand-alone music center in 1969. Designed by Ellis, Arndt and Truesdell, the 40,000-square-foot building opened in 1971. Today it holds the FIM offices and the Flint School of Performing Arts, where kids and adults study music and dance. Its MacArthur Recital Hall hosts chamber shows, jazz nights and FIM benefit evenings.
