Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, a lifelong admirer of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, hired architect Gunnar Birkerts to design a vast new headquarters campus on farmland outside Ann Arbor, instructing him to echo Wright's Prairie School style with low-slung buildings, deep overhangs, brick, copper and earthen berms. Construction began in 1984 and the first 220,000-square-foot office building opened in 1985, eventually growing into a complex spanning roughly half a mile that also included a warehouse and operations center, additional office space, and by 1987 a museum built to display Monaghan's extensive collection of Frank Lloyd Wright furniture and artifacts. Domino's Pizza operated its world headquarters here for years before the company later moved its main offices elsewhere, but Monaghan has kept ownership of the complex, now known simply as Domino's Farms Office Park, which today houses a mix of offices, medical facilities and other tenants on the road that bears Wright's name.
