Inside Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodward Avenue stands the Dodge Brothers Mausoleum, an Egyptian Revival tomb guarded by two granite sphinxes and fronted by papyrus-topped columns, designed by the Lloyd Brothers firm of Toledo. Automakers John and Horace Dodge, who had broken away from Henry Ford to found the Dodge Brothers Company, both died within the same year — John of influenza in January 1920, Horace of complications from the same epidemic that December — and their families built the mausoleum as their shared resting place soon after. Its back wall holds a large stained-glass window depicting pyramids, reflecting the Egyptian Revival taste fashionable in American funerary architecture in the early twentieth century. The mausoleum remains one of the most photographed monuments in Woodlawn Cemetery, which has been receiving burials since 1895.
