Sinai-Grace Hospital took its current form in April 1999, when Sinai Hospital, founded in 1953 to serve Detroit's Jewish community, and Grace Hospital, dating back to 1888, consolidated their services into a single institution on West Outer Drive in northwest Detroit, in a building that had previously housed Mount Carmel Hospital. The combined hospital joined the Detroit Medical Center network and grew into a major Level II trauma center. Gil Hill, the real-life Detroit homicide commander who became famous playing a police captain alongside Eddie Murphy in the 'Beverly Hills Cop' films and later served on the Detroit City Council, died of pneumonia at Sinai-Grace on February 29, 2016. The hospital remains a busy, active part of the Detroit Medical Center today, serving northwest Detroit and beyond.
