The Detroit School of Arts is the six-story Midtown building, near Orchestra Hall, that has housed Detroit's public arts high school since 2005, succeeding the school's earlier home in the old Wilbur Wright building on Rosa Parks Boulevard. Formally still chartered as the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, the school teaches visual art, music, dance and theater alongside academics. After alumna Aaliyah's death in 2001, the school dedicated its recital hall as the Aaliyah Memorial Recital Hall in her honor; she had studied drama at the school's earlier campus and graduated in 1997. The school continues to operate from the Selden Street building today, training generations of Detroit performing and visual artists.
