Music Hall's Vince Paul founded the festival in 2017 with the City of Detroit, the Theater District and more than 40 arts organizations to celebrate the city's music heritage. Each year honored a theme or legend: Aretha Franklin in 2017, when she played a 105-minute hometown set, and The Jacksons in 2018, both receiving keys to the city, followed by a car rally, an open-mic jam, Marvin Gaye and John Lee Hooker in 2019–2022, and along the way Madison Street was renamed Aretha Franklin Way. Organizers reported more than 20,000 visitors, four outdoor stages and 400 paid performers, and the last edition, on August 26, 2023, filled the Music Hall Amphitheatre stage with local funk, soul and R&B acts.
