Make time for these
Every September, Detroit becomes one giant open studio. Detroit Month of Design packs 100+ events into the month, from exhibitions, open studios and product launches to workshops, tours and talks, spread from downtown to neighborhood galleries. It's produced by Design Core Detroit, the nonprofit that stewards the city's UNESCO City of Design designation, the first and only one in the U.S. The festival has been running since 2011, and the 2026 edition, the 16th, was built around the theme "Design Moves the Future." Best part: most events are free, so you can hop from one spot to the next.
- 100+ events in a single month, most of them free
- Open studios and product launches from local designers
- City of Design Talks with guests from other UNESCO design cities
- After-hours specials like Eastern Market After Dark
- A closing symposium at the end of the month
