01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
One Sunday every July, so many kites go up over Belle Isle that the festival's director calls it a block party in the sky. Margo Dalal and Matt Tait launched the Detroit Kite Festival in 2017, and families gather on the island's Cricket Field near the James Scott Memorial Fountain. Bring your own kite, build one in the on-site workshop, or just lie back on a blanket and watch the colors. After a two-year pandemic break it came back in 2022, and in 2026 it hit its eighth year under director Lex Draper Garcia Bey. Kites, food and drinks are sold on site.
