Cars & speed / Downtown
Detroit Grand Prix
IndyCar and IMSA cars tear around a downtown street circuit on the riverfront every late May or early June, and more than half the venue is free to watch.

01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Detroit has been racing on its own streets since 1982, when Formula One roared around the Renaissance Center and Ayrton Senna won here three years running, in 1986, 1987 and 1988. CART took over the race in 1989, it moved to Belle Isle in 1992, and after three decades on the island it came home to downtown in 2023. Today it's a 1.7-mile, nine-turn street circuit along Jefferson Avenue and the Riverwalk, with the NTT IndyCar Series, IMSA sports cars and Indy NXT all on one weekend. The race is run by the nonprofit Detroit Grand Prix, part of the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
