Detroit's Gay Liberation Front was announced in a classified ad in December 1969 and organized in 1970, in the wave of activism that followed Stonewall; Jim Toy was among its founders. Toy came out publicly at a 1970 anti-war rally in Detroit. The group's journal appeared as the Detroit Liberator, then the Detroit Gay Liberator and finally The Gay Liberator, and it outlasted the national GLF paper, running until 1976.
